A listing of characteristics necessary for officers to provide integrity contain; prudence, trust, effacement of self-interests, valor, intellectual integrity, justice and responsibility (Martin 2011). Even though a person portrays good characteristics of integrity and desires to uphold the law in an ethical vogue, they may feel the pressure to succumb to many other officers in order to fit into an exclusive subculture. A subculture is known as a group of those who generally share attitudes, perceptions, assumptions, values, beliefs, techniques for living, and traditions. Since police function entails numerous experiences unique to the field, the subculture can become stronger than the officer's own family ties. Conflicts may, and more than likely, will arise when ever personnel encounter a choice among what could possibly be ethically proper and their loyalty to the different members of their subgroup. This kind of a strong devotion toward fellow officers causes members to trade their particular integrity for this allegiance. One particular conclusion will be that the amount of time an expert is subjected to this socialization process, the higher its effects. When this kind of loyalty towards the subculture becomes too good, the unanimity that follows may adversely affect the ethical ideals of the officers (Martin 2011).
